The performance characteristics of Lupinus arboreus (LA) gum extract as self-healing and corrosion inhibition agent in epoxy-based coating has been investigated. The phytochemical screening was undertaken to ascertain the chemical constituents of the gum extract. The Lupinus arboreus gum extract was encapsulated by each of urea-formaldehyde (UF) and melamine-formaldehyde (MF), and the microcapsules were evaluated by FTIR and XRD techniques. Surface morphology of the coatings formulated with the microcapsules were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements and outdoor immersion assay showed that the Lupinus arboreus gum extract exhibited remarkable anticorrosion and barrier performances in the composite coatings as confirmed by Shore D hardness test, and effectively healed the scribed surfaces. The study has successfully demonstrated that Lupinus arboreus gum could offer remarkable self-healing and anticorrosion functionalities in epoxy-based marine coatings without the use of expensive synthetic co-reactant. Thus, it could be utilized in the formulation of eco-friendly functional marine coatings.
