Introduction:
Insomnia with objective short sleep duration has been associated with incident hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in men, suggesting it represents a more severe insomnia phenotype than insomnia with longer sleep duration. We examined the association of insomnia symptoms with polysomnographically-defined short sleep duration and all-cause mortality in both men and women.
Methods:
We conducted a time-to-event analysis of Sleep Heart Health Study data. Baseline sleep questionnaires were administered and at-home polysomnography was performed between 1994 and 1998. Participants were followed for a median 11.4 years (Q1-Q3 8.8–12.4 years) until death or date of last contact.
