Description
Summary:In addition to musical figures and repertoire, Merkley also draws on the literary, visual, and theatrical arts to fill these layers. Because so much information on music and musicians in fifteenth-century France is lost due to archival damage, his holistic approach seeks to fill historical gaps in the musical and French court milieu of René and his peers, primarily in the decades between 1440 and 1480. The entire archive is currently located in Marseilles, thus any document location named in a departmental archive in Aix will now be found in Marseilles.) In the final chapter, Merkley may overextend his interpretation of the musical implications of Josquin's presence with René, but he does raise important repertorial considerations. [...]there are no tables, appendixes, or helpful graphic apparatuses that might have helped clarify arguments often obscured through indirect and meandering writing.
