Summary: | In natural product researches, the major compound's role and mechanism in its associated biological activity is commonly investigated. [...]in the scientific literature, there are innumerous published studies where the major components have been found to be responsible for these activities. [...]the authors found that the combination of the three active components of the sap is responsible for the analgesic activity of the species in question, where these components act synergistically, as the compounds found in greater concentration were not directly responsible for the biological activity found. [...]it is clear that research involving complex products (composed of several components) should take into account:the fact that the biological effect can be attributed to any of the components of the mixture and not only to the major compounds; that these compounds may interact with each other causing additive, synergistic and/or antagonistic effects; this same interaction may alter the pharmacokinetic profile of the components when compared with administration in isolation, and may alter the absorption, distribution (with alteration of the amount of constituent bound to transport proteins), first-pass metabolism as inhibition of some metabolic routes that favor the permanence of some component for longer and change in the rate of elimination; interaction of several components with the most diverse metabolic routes capable of generating the same biological effect. |
