Description
Summary:In April 2019, the Gender, Sex, and Sexuality conference held its fifth annual conference at SUNY Canton. This issue of Theory in Action highlights the variety of voices, themes, and scholarship presented in response to the conference theme of "Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds, Healthy Societies."At the time, our intent was to address wellness holistically, and examine how attaining wellness is impacted by being in various marginal positions, including race, gender, sexual orientation, geographical location, income level, and others. This is a particularly urgent question in our location of Northern New York in the United States: as a mostlywhite, rural, low-income area, anyone who inhabits the North Country (as it is known here) and belongs to a marginalized group faces a challenging environment. Many of our presenters addressed these marginal positions and how physical and mental health and wellness were negatively affected by lack of access, lack of education, and open hostility to those who are different. We also faced challenges when it came to the health of our conference - our institutions had been pushing us to be self-sustaining, and rely on the contributions of presenters and attendees to fund ourselves, something that is difficult when our conference is in a remote geographical area and cannot attract large numbers. While we were determined to persist in this work that has meant so much to so many, allowing us to build community and interdisciplinary conversation across our universities and communities, the logistical and financial challenges were daunting.
