Description
Summary:Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) at the timing of a routine annual physical exam as an effective tool for the early identification of substance use behavior and motivation to change behavior, especially in the setting of the increase risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms and e-cigarette or vaping associated lung injury (EVALI) associated with adolescents who vape. Methods: Retrospective data was obtained from patients aged 13-19 years old who had a routine annual physical exam at a school based health center from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 (n = 328). During the course of their annual physical exam, all subjects were screened for substance use, specifically utilizing the CRAFFT screening tool, and were eligible for the study. The proportion of those who had a positive score on CRAFFT screening compared to the entire group was calculated. Those who had a positive score were evaluated with regard to brief intervention and action plan. Summary statistics were calculated. The Fisher's exact test was used to determine if any significant differences existed. P-value
