Interaction of Lantanum and Cerium with Oxygen and Sulfur in Nickel Melts at PAr = 0.1 MPa

The method of instant EMF fixation has been used to determine the activity of oxygen in model Ni melts containing up to 0.001–0.20 wt % La and Ce. It is shown that, at P Ar = 0.1 MPa and 1560°C, when cerium is introduced into the melt, the oxygen activity is 4.7 times lower than when deoxidizing wit...

Description
Summary:The method of instant EMF fixation has been used to determine the activity of oxygen in model Ni melts containing up to 0.001–0.20 wt % La and Ce. It is shown that, at P Ar = 0.1 MPa and 1560°C, when cerium is introduced into the melt, the oxygen activity is 4.7 times lower than when deoxidizing with lanthanum. SEM investigation shows that the composition of nonmetallic inclusions in molten Ni deoxidized by La and Ce indicates a stronger bonding of Ce with oxygen than with La and a stronger bonding of La with sulfur than with Ce.
