Summary:A novel approach to the synthesis of 3-(alkylsulfanylmethyl)-substituted 1 H -indoles was developed based on the Fischer indole synthesis involving accessible β-mercapto ketones. Heterocyclization of 3-[(alkylsulfanyl)methyl]alkan-2-ones and phenylhydrazine by the action of ZnCl 2 in MeOH or EtOH gave previously unknown 3-alkyl-3-[(alkylsulfanyl)methyl]-2-methyl-3 H -indoles.
