Summary:For many higher education institutions, certifying degree completion is both challenging and time consuming. Depending on the size of the institution, graduation processing can take multiple staff days to complete. In an age of limited staffing, registrars must leverage technology to handle these increasing workloads. Such was the case with a registrar's office at an university in North Carolina. Plagued with a complex curriculum, a poorly programmed degree audit mostly ignored due to its inaccuracies, unapologetically manual processes, and vast amounts of institutional knowledge existing solely in the minds of staff nearing retirement, the university's graduation process was in need of an overhaul. This article describes the problems with the process and what the university did to improve it.
