Because my work in graduate school at the University of North Carolina has focused on Southern literature and culture, I've long been fascinated by Gurganus and his Halloween pageant. The 2012 Halloween pageant was particularly important both because it was the pageant's twentieth anniversary and because it occurred just a week before the presidential election. A week before Halloween, I asked Gurganus a series of very specific questions about my costume and my role. |
