Description
Summary:Background/Aims: Anemia is major problems among adolescent girls in Indonesia. Weekly supplementation of iron and folic acid was an effective measure to tackle this problem. However, adherence to the supplementation is still low. Using cross sectional design, this study aimed to explore determinants for high school girls' adherence to consume iron and folic acid tablets. Methods: Sample size was calculated based on a pilot study guideline resulting in 136 samples. After consent were obtained, data were collected, coded and analyzed using SPSS 23. Inclusion criteria for the subjects was female high school student from 13 schools which had took iron tablets as a program. Results: Majority, the subjects were aged 16–17 years old (51.5%). Majority of schools did not organize drinking iron tablets together (60.3%). The adherence to iron and folic acid tablets consumption was 34.6%. Most of respondents (60.7%) did not think that iron tablets were necessary, while 18% experienced side effects. Factors that correlated to student's adherence were school organizing to drink iron tablet together, student's knowledge, motivation, ever been checked for Hemoglobin, and received information on benefits of iron tablet from teachers and health staff. Multivariate analysis showed that the most important determinant factors for adherence were students' motivation (OR = 66.28, CI = 10.8–403.6, P = 0.00), school organized students to drink iron tablets together (OR = 29.8, CI = 5.5–161.1, P = 0.00) and ever checked Hemoglobin (OR = 0.24, CI = 0.06–0.92, P = 0.03). Conclusion: Students' motivation, organized drinking iron tablet at school and hemoglobin check were associated with adherence to weekly iron and folic acid supplementation.
