Summary:Background/Aims: Malnutrition, in every form, presents significant threats to human health. Today the world, including Vietnam, faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both undernutrition and overweight. In Vietnam, Child malnutrition (underweight) prevalence has been remarkably reduced: from 51.5% in 1985 to 25.2% in 2005 and it was 17.5% in 2010 and 13.4% in 2017. The prevalence of stunting of children under 5 was 59.7% in 1985, 43.3% in 2000, 29.3% in 2010 and 23.8% in 2017. Besides, the rate of obesity among children under 5 years of age was 5.9% in 2017, and is 6 times higher than that in the year 2000. The prevalence of overweight and obesity of primary school children (6–9 y old) in HCM City was very high- 20% in 2002 and it was 38.5% in 2010.
