Summary:In light of the complex social context surrounding modern science issues (Scheufele, 2013), this study explores the nature of public opinion dynamics surrounding three distinct issues. We build upon the research showing that individuals’ sociocultural (demographics and education) and informational characteristics (media use, knowledge, self-reported knowledge, or familiarity) as well as personal values (deference to science, religiosity, political ideology) contribute to assessments of science issues. In this study, we look at how these characteristics are applied across the three scientific issues. Specifically, we explore the following questions: How do publics use education, information sources, and knowledge (factual and perceived) to assess support of emerging and established technologies? How do personal values influence individuals’ perceptions? We conclude by highlighting the implications of our findings for the future of science policy and science communication.
