Description
Summary:— The review considers the role of purple sulfur bacteria in the global cycles of hydrogen and sulfur, as well as the ecology and physiology of these bacteria in relation to the metabolism of sulfur and hydrogen. Information is presented on five types of hydrogenases involved in consumption or production of hydrogen, as well as on various enzymes involved in the oxidation/reduction of sulfur compounds. Advances in the biochemistry and genetics of the enzymes from these microorganisms make it possible to analyze the interconnection of processes at a new level.
