Summary:Floods are among the most devastating natural hazards in the world, claiming more lives and causing more property damage than any other natural phenomena. Flooding is one of the major natural disasters that affect many parts of the world including developed nations. The damage by flash floods is a universal episode. Flash floods in urban areas are even more devastating. This investigation was under taken to thoroughly study the flash flood mechanism and inundation behavior in semi-hilly urban region of Pakistan using computer modeling. As a result of this study, some useful recommendations have been recorded regarding setting up of a proper flood warning code, establishment of an efficient flood forecasting and warning system, regular channel de-silting activities, updating of rating curve at reference point and generation of flood hazard maps for effective mitigation of flash flood hazard in Rawalpindi city of Pakistan.
