Description
Summary:This article discusses the current breast cancer screening guidelines and the impact of the development and implementation of a Breast Cancer Screening Algorithm (BCSA). The BCSA combined the most conservative screening guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Breast Cancer Genetics Referral Screening Tool. Implementation occurred at an employer-based health center in Indiana with an order rate of 5.6% for screening mammograms among women ages 40 to 74. Compared with the Healthy People 2030 target of 77.1% for screening mammograms, this employer-provided health center demonstrated need for improvement. Use of the BCSA significantly increased the breast cancer screening rate within the health center. •Female breast cancer accounts for the highest rate of new cancer cases.•Approximately 12% of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.•Breast cancer screening recommendations vary among seven medical governing bodies.•A Breast Cancer Screening Algorithm can aid in provider decision-making.
