The Influence of Steel Projectile Shape on its Fracture at High Strain Rates
The paper studies the fracture of high-strength projectiles during their interaction with a steel barrier. Three types of the projectile head are considered, namely plate, semi-spherical and ogival. Normal and oblique impacts at a velocity of 700 and 1000 m/s, respectively are considered herein. The...

Summary: | The paper studies the fracture of high-strength projectiles during their interaction with a steel barrier. Three types of the projectile head are considered, namely plate, semi-spherical and ogival. Normal and oblique impacts at a velocity of 700 and 1000 m/s, respectively are considered herein. The EFES 2.0 software package is used for 3D simulation of impacts using the finite element modeling. In this paper, the normal and oblique impacts on a steel barrier are investigated. The criterion of the projectile fracture is the limit value of the plastic strain rate. The paper investigates the influence of the head shape, projectile velocity, and impact angle on the projectile fracture. The projectile bouncing conditions are determined herein. |
