Summary: | This study aims to determine the microwave activation effect on the surface morphology of activated charcoal from Arenga pinnata merr bunches. This work was divided into 4 stages, namely, the preparation stage, the samples of the APM bunches that had been taken were washed using distilled water and dried under the sun for around ±24 hours. Then the carbonation stage at a temperature of 250°C-400°C and the activation stage using a microwave with temperature variations ranging from 600°C to 800°C for 30 minutes. The description of activated charcoal morphology was determined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and pore diameter was measured by Image-J software. The analysis showed that the activated charcoal which was unactivated has a pore diameter of 28.2 nm. For activation 600°C has a pore diameter of 48.1 nm and for activation 700 °C has a pore diameter of 50.9 nm. Meanwhile, 800°C activation has a diameter of 41.2. The results of the analysis show that the optimum activation at a temperature of 700°C. |
