Description
Summary:For this issue of English Journal, we invited writers to share stories about teaching students to conduct research, stories that explore the evolving parameters of research-how technology has affected instruction on analysis, how students' lives influence topics and methods and assignments, how inquiry can be acutely relevant in a twenty-first century English language arts (ELA) classroom. The BHS Ethnography Project, which asked students to consider "life in a day" at their school, underscored the course theme, Communities and Belonging, and required students to collect data by interviewing at least twenty people and to share their conclusions on a website. Alexandra Kirby and Taryn Galasso, who teach at two Illinois high schools with contrasting demographics, explain their use of case study-style scenarios depicting contemporary social issues to invite students to discuss the themes that appear in the literature they read in their English classes.
