Description
Summary:Chitosan is a promising biopolymer for coating separation membranes of redox flow batteries. Its deposition from a carbonic acid solution under pressure on the Nafion membrane leads to a 1.7-fold reduction in ionic permeability with a slight (6%) decrease in proton conductivity. The discovered effect is a consequence of the penetration of dissolved chitosan molecules under pressure into the membrane owing to which the homogeneity of the material in the contact area of two polymers increases and, as a consequence, the selectivity of the transport characteristics of the membrane improves. The modified composite separator is tested in a real redox flow battery and is shown to increase its energy efficiency.
