Structural Integrity Assessment and Lifetime Prediction for Intermediate Control Bayonets of Control and Protection Systems (CPS) of the WWER-440 Reactor: Part 1. Investigation of Embrittlement of 14Kh17N2 Steel under Neutron Irradiation

This work studies the effect of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and hardness of grade 14Kh17N2 steel used for the bayonets of the intermediate rods of the control and protection systems (CPSs) of WWER reactors. The investigation is carried out on the metal of th...

Description
Summary:This work studies the effect of neutron irradiation on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and hardness of grade 14Kh17N2 steel used for the bayonets of the intermediate rods of the control and protection systems (CPSs) of WWER reactors. The investigation is carried out on the metal of the bayonets irradiated as part of unit 3 of the Novovoronezh NPP to a neutron fluence of up to 8 × 10 20 neutr./cm 2 . The temperature–dose dependence of the yield stress of grade 14Kh17N2 steel is derived, and the correlations among its fracture toughness, structural integrity, and hardness are estimated.
