Description
Summary:We have studied the joint influence of atomic motion and hyperfine splitting on the form of resonance of coherent population trapping (CPT) in a rarefied gas. It is shown that in the presence of the hyperfine structure of the excited level, the motion of atoms leads to an optical shift of the CPT resonance. We have derived an analytic expression for this shift for individual velocity groups of atoms. It is found that there exists additional CPT resonance emerging as a result of the interaction with a nonresonant excited hyperfine level. We have considered the effect of the value of hyperfine splitting of the ground and excited states, as well of temperature, on the shift of the CPT resonance.
