Summary:The magnetic properties of LaMnSi with a nonsymmorphic tetragonal structure were investigated using single crystals for the first time. LaMnSi exhibits an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Mn-3d electrons at TN = 293 K. Since the magnetization along the [001] direction decreases steeply on cooling below TN, an AFM ordered moment is parallel to the [001] direction. We also found that the electrical resistivity shows a small upturn at TN, indicating that an energy gap is partially opened. The mechanism of the gap formation is not ascribed to a superzone gap, as is often observed in metallic antiferromagnets, but to a unique one in nonsymmorphic antiferromagnets with a propagation vector q = 0.
