Summary: | Aromatization of C4 hydrocarbons is an essential approach to convert low value resources into value-added products. In recent years, high performance aromatization catalysts have been continuously developed with the increasing demand of aromatics market. In particular, the importance of metal active sites, acidic sites and pore structure of the catalyst for aromatization of light hydrocarbons has been recognized. In this review, the substantial progress of C4 hydrocarbons aromatization catalysts is summarized and the factors affecting the catalyst performance are discussed, including the modulation of acidity, construction of pore structure and introduction of promoters. The reaction mechanism of aromatization of light hydrocarbons is also briefly described. Finally, current challenges and future trends in the development of aromatization catalysts for C4 hydrocarbons are proposed.
•Review of key progresses of C4 aromatization catalyst in the last 30 years•C4 utilized as value-added chemicals instead of fuel with less carbon emission.•Metal active sites, acidic sites and pore structure are important for the catalyst.•Ga and Zn-modified HZSM-5 are very effective catalysts for C4 aromatization.•Current challenges and future trends in catalyst development were discussed. |
