description Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a virtually non-destructive technique, which is being used to identify all elements of the periodic table simultaneously. Our aim in the present work is to find out the elemental constituents, including toxic elements present in the tendu leaf. Spectral lines of organic elements H, C, N, O and inorganic elements Na, Mg, Al, Ca, K, Si, Fe, Mn, Cr, Ba, Sb and Sr have been detected in the LIBS spectra of the leaf sample. Among these elements, Al, Ba, Sb and Sr are toxic elements. In addition to the appearance of atomic lines of the elements, electronic bands of molecules CN and C 2 are also observed in the LIBS spectra of tendu leaf. Ultraviolet–visible spectra (UV–spectra) have been recorded to identify the organic compounds in the sample, and the presence of nicotine with other organic compounds present in tendu leaf has been observed.
