Description
Summary:[...]the essay that follows the introduction looks at the postal system rather than news itself, since one of the main contentions of the volume is that "postal routes formed the spine of news communications, shaping all printed and manuscript forms that follow, including periodicity" (10). In this and other ways, the essays reflect the relative newness of these approaches. Because these authors are trying to tear down older understandings, and because they are using new tools, some of this work feels unfinished. [...]I am grateful to the editors and their authors for pushing the scholarship on news toward international networks and away from national narratives and a focus on medium. Because of their initiative, the scholarship to emerge in the coming years will be the richer.
