Description
Summary:In the current work, TiB 2 reinforced steel matrix composites were synthesized by a technically feasible and cost-effective hot pressing route. A detailed microstructural analysis of the resultant composite was studied. Using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the microstructure evolution of the composite was studied. FESEM observations indicated the homogeneous distribution of TiB 2 particles in the matrix. The results also revealed the formation of elongated Cr–Fe–Ni phases (fcc: a  = 3.5537 Å space group = Fm 3 ¯ m) in a sympathetic fashion. The size of this phase ranges from 200 to 400 nm. TEM observations indicated a clear interface between steel matrix and TiB 2 particles.
