2
reinforced steel matrix composites were synthesized by a technically feasible and cost-effective hot pressing route. A detailed microstructural analysis of the resultant composite was studied. Using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the microstructure evolution of the composite was studied. FESEM observations indicated the homogeneous distribution of TiB
2
particles in the matrix. The results also revealed the formation of elongated Cr–Fe–Ni phases (fcc:
a
= 3.5537 Å space group = Fm
3
¯
m) in a sympathetic fashion. The size of this phase ranges from 200 to 400 nm. TEM observations indicated a clear interface between steel matrix and TiB
2
particles. |
