Summary:— The article is devoted to the study of the development of ferrous metallurgy as one of the most important branches of industrial production. A comparative analysis of four five-year intervals of industry development in the world and in Russia is given: 2000–2004, 2005–2009, 2010–2014, 2015–2019. The features and factors of the volatility of steel production and consumption, as well as the utilization of production capacities and the main characteristics of imports of industrial goods are considered. Key trends in the development of the industry in Russia, China, India, Japan, the United States and other countries have been identified.
