Summary: | [...]cautious use of drugs in pregnancy is warranted and by studying the prescription pattern periodic change and rational use of drugs can be known. The detailed information about drugs prescribed during the entire hospital stay such as number of drugs prescribed per prescription, number of antibiotics prescribed, number of injections prescribed, use of generic/brand names, drug dose, dosage form, frequency, and duration of treatment will be noted for analysis. Average number of drugs per encounter was 4.48, percentage of encounters with an antimicrobials prescribed is around 70.4%, percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name was 93.5%, percentage of drugs prescribed from essential drugs list was 73.3%, and percentage of encounters with an injection prescribed was 50.4% [Table 3], Majority of the drugs prescribed belonged to essential list of medicine and only few drugs were prescribed by the brand names. [1] In the present study, pre-eclampsia was most commonly recorded high-risk condition followed by eclampsia, antimicrobials were found to be more frequently prescribed drugs followed by antihypertensives, and intravenous route was major route off drug administration, majority of the drugs prescribed belonged to essential list of medicine and categorized under the US-FDA pregnancy Category B. About 50.4% of pregnant women were primigravida with the mean age of 24 years, this shows that younger pregnant women are more prone to develop high-risk conditions and this is similar to the findings done by Smith et al. |
