Summary: | Numerical simulations of various welding process have been investigated by researchers in the past few decades with the advent of faster computation power becoming more and more assessable. Since the welding process involves high temperatures, a coupled thermal- structural simulation becomes imperative for analyzing the post welding effects like residual stresses etc. This paper investigates various approaches, including element types, solver settings etc. and correlates the results with experimental data. The analysis of transient thermo- structural simulation was carried out for butt weld of structural steel material and both temperature and strain fields were calculated for various heat inputs and heat input rates. These results were used for a parametric study for optimization of process parameters using inbuilt optimizer. |
