Summary: | Zinc tellurite glass system in the form of [{(TeO2)0.7 (ZnO)0.3}0.99 (Sm2O3 NPs)0.01]1-y (Ag2O)y, y = 0.005. 0.01, 0.015, 0.02 and 0.025 molar fraction is prepared by means of melt quenching technique. Density measurement was obtained using Archimedes’ principle while molar volume was calculated. Structural variations were measured using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The existence of Sm2O3 NPs was confirmed using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) with particles size of 72.43 nm. The optical absorption investigation were achieved by ultra violet visible (UV-Vis) spectrometry. The optical absorption data have been used to determined the optical properties, such as optical band gap (Eopt), Urbach energy (ΔE) and refractive index (n) which have been shown in the glass composition. The optical band gap energy (Eopt) increases from 2.741 eV at 0.005 molar fraction to 2.785 eV at 0.015 molar fraction while the Urbach energy and refractive index of the synthesized glasses decrease with an increase of Ag2O concentration. |
