Summary: | Nakmura focuses on ink, abstraction, and radical individualism of artist Shinoda Toko. Shinoda's artistic journey was believed to be a personal quest for freedom, and her achievement has been only minimally included in art historical discussions. In her extensive literary output over many decades, the artist herself stressed her individualistic stance and rejected association with any particular movement, group, or school. In 1940, Shinoda realized her first solo show at the Ginza retail store Kyukyodo. She exhibited calligraphy of her original short poems written in kana (Japanese syllabary), but they were harshly criticized by the calligraphy establishment (shodan) as "rootless" or lacking a respectable classical foundation. |
