Description
Summary:The behavior of three various types of steel plate shear walls includes flat, trapezoidal, and sinusoidal is compared to each other under the same quasi-static cyclic loading protocol using the ABAQUS finite element software package. To verify the numerical method, the results obtained from the two numerical models are compared to the corresponding experimental samples. These comparisons reveal that the simulation approach has a desirable accuracy. After verification, a parametric study is performed on the shear wall thickness and the installation angle of the trapezoidal and sinusoidal corrugates. Obtained results show that by increasing the shear wall thickness in all samples the performance of the shear walls is improved. The shear load capacity, and the energy absorption capacity are increased, and the ductility and the stiffness reduction are decreased. For instance, by increasing the thickness of the shear walls from 6 to 10 mm, the shear load capacity of all samples is increased near to 50% averagely. The most dramatic effect of thickness is on the 90° angle sinusoidal wall. In this wall, the energy absorption is increased about 68%. Regarding the installation angle, the results indicate that the 90° angle sinusoidal corrugated sample (vertical waves) has the best and the zero-angle sinusoidal sample (horizontal waves) has the weakest performance among all specimens. The reason can be due to two facts: first, the shear length of the 90° angle sinusoidal steel plate is the greatest among all samples and the second is that the buckling resistance and toughness of the 90° angle sinusoidal steel plate are greater than the other plates.
