Summary: | Long-playing records were a central medium of popular music from the 1960s to the 1990s. In the course of this, the designed LP covers of long-playing records were a decisive component of the multimodal experience of popular music. Nevertheless, they have not yet been systematically studied in terms of their genre-specific visual languages or visual discourses. In an exploratory corpus study, the front covers of 797 LP covers from about a dozen different genres of popular music were coded with respect to a variety of criteria and then quantitatively evaluated with respect to visual patterns, regularities, and differences. Some results of this explorative evaluation are presented and discussed, and conclusions are drawn with regard to both genre-specific and encompassing visual languages of popular music. |
