Description
Summary:The writings of the Martin Buber and D. W. Winnicott are each vast in scope and reveal intriguing points of overlap when we consider the relational themes of their work. Each writer posits that we are born into relation and from this primary state develop into unique individuals. In this paper, similar aspects of Buber's and Winnicott's work will be brought together into dialogue to describe the concept of a relational self. Both of these writers celebrate creativity and healing that is nurtured in a trusting and affirming interpersonal milieu. Winnicott and Buber also each wrote about the concept of authenticity, a classic existential theme, and this paper also considers how a self-in-relation lives authentically. Finally, there will be a brief consideration of these ideas as applied to the aims of psychotherapy from an existential-humanistic orientation.
