Micromechanics of Impact Damage in Glasses of the SiO2–TiO2 System

— Glasses of the SiO 2 –TiO 2 system are used as protective coatings, especially for materials with small thermal expansion. Combining acoustic emission measurements and Raman spectroscopy has made it possible to correlate specific features of the mechanical response of the glasses to impact damage...

description — Glasses of the SiO 2 –TiO 2 system are used as protective coatings, especially for materials with small thermal expansion. Combining acoustic emission measurements and Raman spectroscopy has made it possible to correlate specific features of the mechanical response of the glasses to impact damage with modifications of their structure on the addition of various TiO 2 dopant concentrations to silica. In the case of the glass containing 8 mol % TiO 2 , initial signs of phase separation showed up not only in the Raman spectrum, but also as a sharp change in the fracture behavior of the composite.
