Summary:The reaction of 5-aryl-4-hetaroyl-3-hydroxy-1-hydroxyethyl-1,5-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-2-ones with p -toluidine proceeds at the carbonyl group in the side chain at the C 4 atom of the heterocycle to form 5-aryl-4-[2-hetaryl(4-methylphenylamino)methylidene]-1-hydroxyethylpyrrolidine-2,3-diones. The reaction of 5-aryl-4-hetaroyl-3-hydroxy-1-hydroxyethyl-1,5-dihydro-2 H -pyrrol-2-ones with hydrazine hydrate affords dihydro- and tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4- c ]pyrazoles.
