Summary: | In “Forage, Dye, Make,” Kelly Pretty and Sue Elliott collaborated on a community art project despite pandemic restrictions in 2021. Daily acts of foraging, solar dyeing, and making became a way of adapting to the living conditions of a three-month lockdown in Auckland, New Zealand, and for both artists, grieving the loss of loved ones. Shared progressively over social media, the project inspired others to turn to their own local pockets of nature to begin foraging and solar dyeing, presenting an opportunity to reexperience the local in new ways and demonstrating the potential for public art to transform experiences of isolation and revalue nature in a South Pacific city. Mimicking the progressive nature of their work, Pretty and Elliott’s project is presented on the cover and in four discrete sections throughout the issue. |
