Summary: | The European Union emphasises the need to sever the link between economic growth, resource consumption and waste production and has set targets to achieve the most efficient use of natural resources and reduce waste. These changes have led to the amendment of laws in member countries, including Slovakia, analysed in this article, and are creating pressure to increase efficiency in waste management. Based on long-term research (2001–2020), the article evaluates the development of the efficiency of in-house provision and outsourcing of municipal solid waste collection (MSW) and disposal services for the whole of Slovakia. The second part of the article shows the possibilities to increase efficiency by waste separation in a selected region of Slovakia. Using DEA analysis, we show the importance of separate waste collection for increasing the efficiency of MSW collection and disposal. The main conclusions show that outsourcing the collection and disposal of MSW in the conditions of Slovak municipalities is the dominant method of service provision, although it does not always yield the expected results in terms of increased efficiency and quality of service. |
