Description
Summary:This article discusses the history of the study of the Late Carboniferous-Early Permian genus Somoholites , and changes in views on its taxonomy, species composition and diagnostic characters. Most species of this genus come from Russia. Several species are known from the USA, Canada, Indonesia (Island of Timor), Japan, and probably China. Based on the study of materials from Bashkortostan (Shakhtau quarry), Verkhoyansk Region and the Polar Urals, and published data, the diagnostic characters of the genus are re-evaluated, and its diagnosis and species composition are emended. It is concluded that the South Ural Somoholites described as S. beluensis does not differ significantly from another species from this region S. shikhanensis and should be considered under this name.
