Summary: | A potential pollution source of the Neva R. and the Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea, is the landfill of toxic wastes of the I–V hazard class Krasnyi Bor, located on the left-bank side of the Neva catchment basin. In the case of emergency at the landfill, toxic waste can reach the river through the hydrographic network of tributaries emptying into the main channel upstream of water intakes of St. Petersburg city. Mathematical modeling was used to calculate the possible propagation of toxic substances in the hydrographic network in the catchment basin and next in the Neva channel up to the nearest water intake of St. Petersburg and next to the Neva Bay in the Gulf of Finland under different development scenarios of the emergency in the landfill and at different water abundance. Estimated values of solute dilution at different water abundance are given for the motion of the discharged wastewater over the drainage basins of the Izhora and Tosna rivers. It is shown that there is a time margin (15–25 h) for taking the necessary measures to protect the nearest water intake of St. Petersburg or to intercept the discharged wastes in the hydrographic network. The specific features of suspended matter motion toward water intakes are assessed. |
