Description
Summary:Through the analysis of construction-related imagery in a series of artworks from the 1970s, when the microbrigadas were first established, until the 2010s, De Solorzano will trace the changing commitment of Cuban artists to the revolutionary process, and will examine the transforming professional identity of Cuban artists during this period. A study of the representation of masons and construction work in these artworks will shed light on Cuban artists' developing understanding of the nature of their labor, and on their self-inquiry as cultural producers. The sense of the development of art and labor over time frames the selected works under discussion: by examining the main phases of the revolution, she will analyze the changing relationship between cultural creators and the state throughout the years.
