Description
Summary:The long-lasting discussion about the marine or freshwater genesis of Salmoniformes is still unsettled. No convincing evidence of either point of view has been found so far. The arguments for the freshwater origin of salmoniforms are analyzed using the “probabilistic” method of phylogenetic reconstruction and genetic approach. The analysis shows that the arguments set forth cannot be considered as evidence for the freshwater genesis of this taxon. The lack of actual facts and theoretical bases of the ancient freshwater residence of Salmoniformes makes it difficult to prove that they acquired a freshwater lifestyle in the Cretaceous–Paleocene just to become anadromous again in the Eocene.
