Optimization of 4,4-Dimethyl-1,3-dioxane Synthesis Conditions in Condensation of tert-Butanol with Formaldehyde over Zeolites A and X

The paper describes linear optimization of process conditions for condensation of tert- butanol with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of synthetic zeolites (CA-Y, NaA-Y, CaA-Y, NaX, and CaX) and phosphoric acid as catalysts. The process was carried out in an autoclave at 100–150°C, 0.5–0.6 MPa,...

Description
Summary:The paper describes linear optimization of process conditions for condensation of tert- butanol with aqueous formaldehyde in the presence of synthetic zeolites (CA-Y, NaA-Y, CaA-Y, NaX, and CaX) and phosphoric acid as catalysts. The process was carried out in an autoclave at 100–150°C, 0.5–0.6 MPa, and a stirring speed of 60 rpm. The selectivity towards 4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane (DMD) as a target product in the Prins reaction involving tert- butanol was investigated as a function of optimization parameters such as reaction time, temperature, reactant ratio, phosphoric acid content, and synthetic zeolite type. For each “parameter vs. DMD selectivity” function, an extremum point corresponding to the optimal parameter value was found. In the presence of NaA-Y, the DMD selectivity reached 98%.
