Summary: | Over the past few years, stone and sand transporting trucks operating in Aceh Besar have experienced rear driveshaft failure marked by a broken shaft in the fillet section. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the factors responsible for the failure analysis of the rear driveshaft of trucks. Several tests were carried out to support this analysis such as visual observation of the fracture surface using macro photos, testing the hardness of the shaft cross-section using the Rockwell method. Furthermore, microscopic observations used a Bellstone stereo microscope and an Olympus BX41M optical microscope. This is in addition to the use of chemical composition, observing fault patterns using SEM images, and exact analysis. The results showed that the leading cause of the failure of the drive shaft is the presence of porosity due to the decrease in the strength of the drive shaft, its hardness, surface area at the initial location of the crack thinning, and depth. In conclusion, the shear experienced by the rear driveshaft shows that the spline has exceeded the allowable shear stresses. |
