Description
Summary:Laser cutting of aluminum-lithium alloys with a pulsed Q-switched CO2 laser and argon as an assisted gas has been experimentally investigated. Unlike cutting with a CW laser, an optical breakdown of the assist gas occurs in the interaction region, an optical pulsating discharge is created. Cutting is performed under conditions of simultaneous exposure of the material to a laser beam and a discharge plasma. Cutting was also carried out with argon in a continuous mode and in a pulsed mode with air and helium, when no optical discharge occurs in the gas. The cutting was carried out at the same process gas pressure of 0.5 bar and the same average laser power of 1.5 kW. The best cut quality is obtained when cutting in a pulse-periodic mode with argon, when cutting occurs in the presence of an optical discharge plasma.
