Summary: | Significant growth in competitive masters/veterans sporting events, nationally and internationally, as well as its related scholarship has emerged on a global scale. For example, the physiological and psycho-social health benefits of masters/veterans football have been well documented. However, participation in international masters/veterans football events, similar to many traditional team sports, tends to fall off dramatically from the age of early to mid-50s. Very few studies have documented the sustainability of international masters/veterans football events. Meeting the diverse needs and circumstances of international masters/veteran players is a complex and multifaceted process. No one-size fits all. This article examines the evolution and sustainability of the International Masters/Veterans 5-a-side World Cup Football Tournament (2006–2017). Longitudinal data suggests that critical tournament leadership contributions, key institutional supports, and a scholarly approach to implementation are key to the success of sustaining international participation in this masters/veterans World Cup football tournament. For example, a scholarly approach focuses on research informed (e.g., sports science contributions) and evidence-based (e.g., tournament innovations, responsive age-appropriate football experiences) international tournament practices. Fostering a networked improvement community grounded in football inquiry enhanced the sustainability of this international tournament to meet the diverse needs and circumstances of international masters/veteran players. |
