Description
Summary:With the commensurate increase in importance of IT within organizations, the gamut of challenges facing IS managers and executives keeps increasing. However, literature is largely silent on what to prioritize given the large gamut of all seemingly important challenges. Drawing from practitioner- and academic-oriented research, we argue that three capabilities are central to managing the IT function in organizations to drive performance: talent capability, structural capability, and technical capability. We investigate the primacy of the three capabilities and their configurations by analysing data from a large survey of 8,356 business leaders from around the world. Our results indicate that multiple configurations of these three capabilities lead to performance. More importantly, personnel capability is a necessary and sufficient condition in impacting performance.
