Summary: | The post-Brexit landscape in the north and south of Ireland has resulted in more focused discussions on the possibilities associated with the reunification of Ireland. The welfare state on both sides of the border provides social security protection to those who are out of work and will remain an essential element of any new constitutional settlement. This paper aims to set the scene for future conversations on the development of an all-Ireland social welfare system. The respective systems have more in common than not, creating both opportunities and challenges that must be given adequate thought and attention in preparation for a potential border poll. |
