Temperature-Dependent Wear Behavior of Air Plasma Sprayed Alumina and Alumina–Titania Composite Coatings

Description
Summary:The air plasma spraying (APS) method is used for coating the pure alumina (PA) and composite of alumina–titania (AT) on 304 stainless steel substrates. For the composite coatings, in the alumina matrix, the percentage addition of titania was13 wt% (AT13) and 40 wt% (AT40). For all APS coatings, microstructures were studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-rays (EDX) analysis. By using the X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique, the phases of APS coatings were investigated. Vicker’s indentation technique has been utilized to measure microhardness for all coatings. The wear behavior of coatings under the influence of temperature was investigated in pin on disk method. The range of temperature for the wear study varied from ambient temperature to 200 °C. For the AT composite coatings, the hardness property has been impacted by the percentage of titania content in the composite. Across all the temperatures, AT13 coating showed the least wear rate when compared to the other two APS coatings, viz., PA and AT40 composite coatings. The wear resistance of all the coatings decreased with the increase in temperature.
